It’s been a tough year.

Covid-19, quarantines, social distancing, masking, protests, riots, fires, hurricanes, home schooling, the election…

Some days (honestly most days) it’s just too much!

Constant exposure to shocking and traumatic events, like the ones we are experiencing in 2020…

Takes its toll on our minds and on our bodies. 

When our brains sense that we are in danger, we respond by going into fight-flight-or-freeze mode. 

Our bodies produces stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol in response to the fear.

 Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline affect your entire physical body. 

Stress affects digestion.  Our digestive tract is filled with nervous system cells which are affected by stress hormones. Symptoms of acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome and other bowel issues such as diarrhea may increase. 

Stress can impair your immune system.  Numerous studies show that stress can lower immunity by making it harder to fight off foreign invaders. Stress hormones can also increase inflammation and can worsen autoimmune symptoms.  

Stress interferes with sleep.  High levels of the stress hormones cortisol, adrenaline, and epinephrine make it hard to get adequate sleep, which prevents the body from restoring and rebuilding vital functions.

Stress can create memory and mental health issues.  People under stress often struggle with focus and concentration.  Stress can also contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and overwhelm.

Stress can makes us more sensitive to pain and it can also cause pain due to the tension we feel in our muscle. 

Stress can increase risk of heart disease and diabetes. By increasing blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugars, stress increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

 Stress takes its toll on your emotional and mental health.

When we experience an emotion, a couple of things happen.

First, we feel the emotion and any thoughts or physical sensations that come along with it.  

Next, we can choose to let the emotion go and we move on.  

However, if either of these steps is interrupted the emotional experience is incomplete.

When this happens the energy of the emotion is likely to become stored in our bodies.   

If you’ve experienced emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety, rage, overwhelm, panic, despair, grief, dread, shock, helpless, hopeless, nervousness, isolation, loneliness, or worry…

And you haven’t processed the emotions and let them go,

They are likely trapped in your body.

Trapped emotions can affect your mental health and contribute to feelings or anxiety and depression, and other unwanted feelings that you can’t seem to shake.

Trapped emotions can interfere with the proper function of your body’s organs and tissues and wreak havoc with your physical health, causing pain, fatigue, and illness.

Trapped emotions can affect your emotional health, causing you to make the wrong assumptions, overreact to innocent remarks, misinterpret behavior, and sabotage your relationships. 

Trapped emotions can get stuck in your subconscious mind, causing you to easily be triggered by issues that aren’t even related to what’s going on in the present moment.

We can try to ignore these feelings or tranquilize them with carbs, alcohol, drugs, or Netflix binges, but this only buries them deeper and never fully resolves them.

But there is HOPE!

Karen Donaldson, MS, RD, LD

Karen is a registered dietitian, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Certified Practitioner, EFT Certified Weight Loss Coach and Certified Emotion Code Practitioner.

Her personal struggles with anxiety and managing her emotions paved the way for her to help people take a more holistic approach to their health and happiness.

As an energy healing practitioner and a mindset expert, she helps people learn how to release the negative energies they have stored in their bodies, feel peaceful and calm no matter what’s going on around them, and create the joyful lives they deserve.
