I created the mind-body-spirit weight loss program because I knew there had to be something more to weight loss than just eating less and exercising more, or trying the latest fad diet, or having surgery. Something was missing. So many clients would be “good” for a few weeks, or even a few months, and then fall off the wagon and return to their old habits. Sadly, the weight they had lost during their “good” period was usually regained, regardless of what program they were on. Most of my clients had tried, succeeded, and ultimately failed, with numerous diets and exercise plans. The most common reasons for “failure” included:
“I know what I’m supposed to do, but I just can’t do it”;
“I need help with my emotional eating”;
“I just want this war with food to be over”;
“No matter what I do I can’t lose weight”.
If these statements sound familiar to you, please keep reading!
Of course I tried counseling them in the “traditional” methods advised for emotional eating – call a friend, read a book, take a bath, etc. However, as nice as these activities sound, the reality is that most people don’t have the time – or inclination – to follow them, especially in the middle of a food craving. The other reality…they often don’t work.
As a registered dietitian and personal trainer, I was able to help women achieve many of their goals, but too often they got “stuck”. And so did I. To be honest, it was embarrassing and frustrating. How could I help people lose weight when I struggled with my own eating and weight issues? I still remember teaching classes on weight loss and then coming home and “unwinding” with a big bowl of buttered popcorn, followed by some chocolate! As the owner of a weight loss clinic, this was not an easy thing to admit. In the end, however, it turned out to be one of those infamous blessings in disguise and led to the creation of the mind-body-spirit weight loss program.
